When it comes to learning a new language, it takes a lot of practice and determination. Many students are afraid to speak the new language because they’re worried about saying the wrong thing with the wrong tense and sounding stupid. When you’re learning a new language, however, you need to approach it the way that a three-year-old approaches learning his or her native language.
Have you ever heard a three-year-old say, “I is hungry.” Three-year-olds use the wrong conjugation of verbs or the wrong words all the time. They use the wrong tense, the wrong prepositions, etc. And it’s okay because we know they’re learning and that they’ll get it.
It’s the same way with those learning a new language. It’s better to immerse yourself and make tons of mistakes then to stay quiet unless you’re sure you won’t make a mistake. Whether you’re learning a language as part of your online college degree program or you’re learning because you plan on living in a country that speaks a different language, try to use the language as much as possible. It’s helpful if you can find someone else that speaks the language who you can work with.
Remember, though, not to worry about making mistakes. People will still likely understand what you’re trying to say and will appreciate that you’re trying. It’s okay to make mistakes. You wouldn’t get upset or make fun of someone learning English who makes mistakes and those who speak the language will likewise understand.
