Teaching ESL Students

A big challenge for teachers nowadays is the rising number of students entering their classrooms that may speak very little or no English. This raises a concern for how to best teach these students. Teachers cannot spend the majority of their time focusing on one student, which takes away from their teaching other students. So, in this scenario how can a teacher effectively teach a student who does not fully understand the English language? What are the options that can be offered to these students to not only teach them the English language but to give them the knowledge and understanding necessary for them to function well, maybe even excel in their new country?

The problem arises not only when students are not able to fully understand or speak English but they are brought to America from other countries with different cultures as well. While they are trying to learn our language and are being placed in the mainstream classrooms, they also have to learn our customs and expectations along the way. Something as simple as learning that they must sit during lessons and cannot speak while the teacher is speaking, etc. can be difficult concepts for some of these students.

So, what is the solution for students and teachers? In some schools there are English as Second Language (ESL) classes offered for these students their first year. These classes are focused on helping these students learn the English language and American customs and behavioral expectations. This allows these students to be integrated more slowly and gives them the tools they need to succeed without placing all the other students and the teachers at a disadvantage while trying to catch them up.

Unfortunately, this is not the norm. This option is not being offered often enough. Many times smaller schools just do not have the funding or resources available to offer separate classes for ESL students. However, offering an opportunity for a teacher’s aid to help these students or tutors, etc. would go a long way in providing the resources that are needed.
